Nin a small town only 14 km far from Zadar has a very rich and tumultuous history and a very interesting location. The heart of Nin, its historical centre lies on an islet with only 500 m diameter. Nin is located in a lagoon on the eastern part of the Adriatic sea, surrounded by natural sandy beaches and linked with the mainland by two stone bridges (16th century).
The most convenient position and a fertile area enabled it to become an urban centre already in the past… A continuity of life on the area of Nin appears 10000 years ago, according to the historians. The present-day town on the islet developed 3000 years ago and it belongs in the group of the older towns on the eastern part of Adriatic sea.
Nin is the first Croatian royal town, and its glorious period was between 7th and 13th century. Since the half of 9th century Nin is the seat of the first Croatian bishop. The bishops from Nin played a great role since their struggle for national language (Glagolitsa) was of religious, cultural and political character and a struggle for Croatian independency as well. The significant rulers connected with the history of Nin are: prince Viseslav, prince Branimir, king Tomislav, king Petar Kresimir IV., king Zvonimir…
