Mljet belongs to a group of southern Dalmatia islands. The highest peak of the island is Veliki Grad, at an altitude of 513 m. Due to warm summers and mild winter months, the island is covered with rich Mediterranean vegetation. 72 of the island is covered by forest, which makes it the island with most surfaces covered by woods of all Adriatic sea islands. Because of the rich flora and fauna and untouched nature, north western part of the island of Mljet was proclaimed a National Park in 1961. and that was the first attempt maid to preserve the original eco –system of Adriatic sea.
